1. Set Priorities

We don’t have time for everything that we have to or want to do. That’s the fact. So we have to learn to prioritize and do only things that are in our area of interest or that are important. All things can be divided in 4 categories, (see the table below) and only important things has to be done: things like your paper that has to be submitted today or not urgent but important things like your fitness plan or that photoshop skills that you always wanted to learn. Only things that are under “important” category makes your today better and lead to successful tomorrow.

You may have heard about Pareto principle: 80% of the effects comes from 20% of causes. This means that 20% of our time/efforts brings us 80% of results. Think twice if you want to spend that free hour in the evening watching TV shows, going for jogging or meeting new people. What will effect your future in the better way?

2. Set goals. Make a plan. Think of tactics.

The most important thing in getting things done is knowing what you want and moving towards your goals: have to submit your paper next monday; want to travel in Thailand for a month; want to become well known graphic designer? Start with collecting the literature on the provided topic; research on the ways to save some money; sign up for Adobe Photoshop course! Remember, your goals exist only if their are written on the paper.

How do you eat an elephant? One small bite at a time

Break your goal into small steps and start accomplishing it today. Create a habit to make to do lists for the next day every evening before so you are prepared and don’t get frustrated with all the tasks and information you’ll face in the morning. Dont’ skip from the one assignment to another. Concentrate on the one thing and get that feeling of fulfilment when it’s done before moving to another.

Eat the frog in the morning first

Business consultant Brian Tracy compared the frog to the most unpleasant and difficult task of the day. Postponing this task only brings you unpleasant emotions and irritation. So it’s better to accomplish this task in the morning first and then start doing less difficult things.

3. Cut-off time-consumers

People who are negative and like to complain a lot. Things and events that are not enjoyable or don’t bring you any value. Learn how to say no to your friends and yourself when it’s necessary to concentrate on more important things. Train your power of will and conquer your laziness. When you are starting to do your task, turn of social media, email and cell phone. Do whatever is needed first and then move further.
