One of the most popular social media platforms among young people is TikTok. And it's not just for entertainment – TikTok can also be used as a learning tool. There's no doubt that TikTok is a fun platform to scroll through and watch short videos. But did you know that it can also be an educational tool?
TikTok is a great way to learn in short, bite-sized chunks. The videos are usually under 60 seconds, so you can easily fit them into your schedule. And since they're often funny or creative, they're more likely to hold your attention than a traditional lecture or textbook.
Sure, you're not going to find in-depth lectures on world history or complex math tutorials. But there are still plenty of interesting and useful titbits of information to be gleaned from the app. For example, you can learn about different cultures and lifestyles from the various users who post videos from all over the world. You can also find cooking tutorials, beauty tips, and more.
So what are some of the potential benefits of using TikTok in education?
How TikTok can benefit students
1. Engage young learners.
For one, it can be a great way to engage students who might not be as interested in more traditional forms of learning. Let's face it, most people would rather watch a short video than read a textbook.
2. Supplement other forms of learning.
TikTok can be used to supplement other forms of learning. For example, if you're studying for a history test, you could look up videos that give more information about the topics you're covering.
3. Entertaining.
TikTok can simply be a fun and entertaining way to learn new things. After all, learning doesn't always have to be serious!
For students, using TikTok for educational purposes is all about finding the right content. There are tons of great educational channels and accounts out there, so take some time to explore and find ones that fit your interests.
There are tons of educational videos on TikTok, covering everything from history and science to languages and life skills. You can follow educational accounts, like @KhanAcademy or @Pearson, or search for specific topics you're interested in
Now that we've established that TikTok can be educational, let's look at some ways you can use it in the classroom from an educator’s point of view..
If you're a teacher, you could create a class account and have students post videos related to the topics you're covering in class. You could also use TikTok to supplement your lectures with short videos that illustrate key points.
5 ways to use TikTok as an educator
1. Use TikTok to introduce a new topic.
If you're teaching a unit on a particular subject, start by posting a TikTok video on the topic. This will get your students interested and engaged from the very beginning.
2. Have students create their own videos.
TikTok is all about creativity, so why not have your students make their own educational videos? They can teach each other – or the world – about what they're learning in class.

3. Use TikTok as a supplement to traditional instruction.
There's no reason you can't use both TikTok and more traditional methods of instruction. If you're showing a video in class, for example, post it on TikTok as well so students can watch it again later.
4. Use TikTok to break down complex concepts.
Sometimes, a short and concise video is all it takes to explain a complicated concept. If your students are having trouble understanding something, look for a TikTok video that can help.
5. Have students find videos on their own.
TikTok is a great way for students to take control of their own learning. Encourage them to explore the platform and find videos on topics they're interested in.
Finally, even if you're not a student or teacher, you can still use TikTok as an educational tool for your own personal learning. There's no shame in admitting that you learn best by watching videos!
So there you have it, a few ways that TikTok can be educational. Who knew the app could be so useful? So next time you're mindlessly scrolling through TikTok, take a moment to pause and learn something new. It might just surprise you!
