This programme is specifically designed to provide:

Conversion to PhD

Students in the Research Degree programme may convert to a PhD candidate if they satisfy the following criteria:

  1. Excellent progress in their research.
  2. Demonstrated potential to expand their project to PhD level.
  3. Successful completion of a rigorous assessment.

If approved, the student’s PhD candidature start date will be backdated to their original Research Degree registration date. This allows them to obtain a PhD within a shorter timeframe, eliminating the need to complete a Master’s programme.

    • Proposal Defence
    • Half-yearly research progress monitoring
    • Work Completion Defence
    • Thesis Examination
    • Viva Voce
  • Taught module on Research Methodology, providing essential knowledge for conducting effective research.
  • Regular discussions with supervisors to ensure research direction, quality, and significance of findings.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.75, or its equivalent qualification as accepted by the Senate.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting a CGPA of 2.75 can be accepted, subject to a rigorous internal assessment.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 as accepted by the Senate and with minimum 5 years relevant working experience, subject to a rigorous internal assessment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in non-related fields with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 as accepted by the Senate and without relevant working experience, subject to passing pre-requisite courses.

Note: The above entry requirements may differ for specific programmes based on the latest programme standards published by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

Curriculum

Start of Candidature

  • Complete all required modules (if any)

    • At first opportunity in Year 1
    • Must pass research methods module
    • Research Methodology required for those without a research background
  • Research Colloquium

    • Within the first 9 months
    • Arrange with Programme Leader for a presentation slot
    • Gather feedback on research proposal
  • Proposal Defence (PD)

    • Within the first 12 months
    • Submit detailed proposal document
    • Presentation to the examination panel
  • Conversion Option

    • By the end of Year 1, may apply to convert MPhil to PhD
    • Must pass assessment
    • PhD candidature backdated to MPhil registration date

End of Candidature

  • Work Completion Defence (WCD)

    • 4 months before the minimum candidature period
    • Submit draft thesis
    • Presentation of completed work
  • Submit Thesis for Examination

    • Before the maximum candidature period
    • Comb-bound thesis copies submitted for examination
  • Viva Voce

    • Upon receipt of all examiners’ reports
    • Presentation of completed work to Examination Board
  • Award of Degree

    • MPhil (or PhD if converted)
