Inspired by the prevalent series of natural disaster happening around the world, students from Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) created winning designs for the MISF Creative Art & Miniature Shoes Competition 2013. MIA students swept home the first prize and 4 consolation prizes in the Creative Art category. In addition, MIA also won the second prize and 2 consolation prizes for the Miniature Shoes category. All the finalists of the competition were rewarded with the opportunity to display their designs at the 4th Malaysia International Shoe Festival (MISF) 2013 which was held at Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
Girl power of 3 young ladies secured the first prize in the Creative Art category. Lim Jia Hui, Emily Lim and Tan Jye Ying brought home the RM3000 cash prize and a trophy for their distinguished design piece which was undoubtedly the favourite among the team of local and international judges. Entitled Nature’s Fury, the art sculpture design represents the affliction caused by natural disasters such as earthquake and tsunami. This art piece also serves as a reminder for people not to exploit Mother Nature.
Lim Jia Hui who lives by the quote “no pain, no gain” attributes this win to teamwork and guidance from the lecturers. “My team mates and I are elated to win this competition. Through this competition, we’ve learnt that a strong design concept is paramount in order to produce a unique art piece”, said Jia Hui. She shared that the competition also gave her an opportunity to show off the presentation skills that she has acquired in MIA. “I believe presentation of work should be done systematically in order for the judges to understand the concept and meaning behind the design. I am glad that MIA has prepared me well on this”, she added.
Team ‘Lava’ which is made up of 4 team members displayed indomitable spirit in their miniature shoes design which goes by the title ‘Destroyed, Rebuilt, Refresh’. The design builds on the strength, perseverance and the indefatigable spirit of humankind who work together to rebuilt their loss and defy all odds caused by earthquakes. The team secured the second prize in the Miniature shoes category, winning them a RM2000 cash prize and a trophy.
On the win, Rebecca Cheong shared that it was a pleasant surprise for the team as entries from other institutions were very good too. “This competition is full of challenges but facing and overcoming the obstacles made us stronger and determined to improve. As a team, we did a lot of brainstorming to solve issues that came along and to come out with really unique designs”. She also thanked the lecturers and advisors who have helped and supported the team throughout the competition.
Founded in 1967 as a non-profit institution, MIA has produced thousands of professional artists, designers and musicians for the creative industry. The Institute offers a range of other Diploma courses in the field of art, design and music including Illustration, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Textile & Fashion Design, Industrial Design, Fine Art and Music with comprehensive and well-designed course contents. All the courses offered are accredited by Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA).
Strong International Links
MIA has established links with prestigious universities and colleges in UK, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and China. Through these linkages, MIA graduates may proceed to complete their Degree programme for a minimum of one year. The uniqueness of this arrangement enables students to save time and cost to pursue their B.A. degrees overseas. It is also a very ideal pathway to obtain a well-balanced education which combines the Malaysian and overseas learning experience and exposures. With the MQA accreditation, MIA graduates may also further their studies in local universities.
Open Day and Extended Counselling
MIA is now open for its new intake which commences on 19 August 2013. In conjunction with that, MIA will be holding its Open Day on 27 July from 9:30am – 4pm. There will be talks by various Departments regarding Art, Design and Music. Counters will be set up for counselling purposes and lecturers will be available to meet visitors who are keen to know more about the courses offered in MIA.
An exhibition will be held at MIA’s art gallery, featuring a wide range of art and design works created by young talents of MIA. Students who are interested to pursue studies in art and design are welcome to visit the exhibition to get an in-depth idea about how their creative potentials can be developed at MIA.
For the convenience of parents and students, MIA will extend its weekend counselling hours on the following dates: 3/8, 4/8, 17/8, 18/8 and 24/8. Time will be from 9:30am – 4pm.
