Accommodation

Living in Halls of Residence

For many students, living in Halls of Residence is an essential part of the university experience. It often marks students’ first experience of independence and allows for the development of lifelong friendships.

Newman has 200 single study bedrooms in Halls on-campus. Rooms are fully furnished with a bed, bedside table, fixed wardrobe and cupboards plus accessories such as a desk and chair. The standard bedrooms are single study rooms with hand basin and shared bathroom facilities. The en-suite rooms are single study bedrooms with hand basin and a private bathroom. Students are required to bring their own bedding and any kitchen utensils they require or they are able to purchase a bedding pack at £25.00 each from the Housekeeping Department, with £15.00 being refunded when the bedding pack is returned in good condition.

First year students are given priority where possible in the allocation of rooms although a room cannot be guaranteed to all later applicants. Accommodation in halls of residence is guaranteed for all international and exchange students. PGCE students are allocated together in a quieter block where possible. We try to balance the number of students from all years who live in and students are encouraged to apply even if they live locally, in order to fully appreciate the complete student experience.

During the first couple of weeks, second and third year students act as Guardian Angels to help first year, exchange and PGCE students settle in. Living in Newman’s Halls on campus gives you the opportunity to have freedom within a secure environment with the support of the Hall Tutors, who are available to offer help out of office hours if required.

Halls are a great way to meet people from different courses, make new friends and really experience the community spirit on campus.

Campus

Being founded as recently as 1968, the buildings are modern and purpose-built. The campus is arranged around a series of inner quadrangles of lawns and trees. Halls of residence provide single study-bedrooms for over 200 students, conveniently adjacent to the teaching areas and well-stocked library. Over £20 million is being invested on improving the campus for students, including a vibrant new-build entrance and state-of-the-art library, creating a modern and attractive learning environment.

Situated on the outskirts of south west Birmingham, Newman's campus is based in Bartley Green, some 8 miles from the city centre and overlooks Bartley reservoir and the Worcestershire countryside beyond. Its location makes it convenient for access to both the M5 and M42 motorways.
