Entry Requirements
- Typical A-Level Offer: BCC to include English;
- GCSEs: The University normally requires a minimum 5 GCSEs including Mathematics and English at Grade C or above, or their equivalent but consideration is given to individual circumstances.
- IELTS grade of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component.
Curriculum
In your first year of the English degree, you’ll choose modules from each of the four subject areas. Literature modules include Thinking with Texts, Reading/Writing Women’s Literature, and Shakespeare. Language modules explore the influence of communicative and sociolinguistic contexts, and the past, present and future of the English language. Creative writing modules introduce you to the practice of writing fiction, poetry, and for the media. TESOL modules cover grammar and lexis, and phonology.
In year two of the English degree, you can choose modules from two or three of the subject areas. Options include Postcolonial Literature, Observation and Peer Teaching, Language, Power and Ideology, and Writing for Children.
In your final year, you can specialise in one subject or continue with a combination. You can also complete a dissertation in one of the subject areas.
