If you were tasked to organize a Sports Day event for the school faculty, what would you do? Badminton tournament? Paintball competition? Or “sukaneka” at a neighbourhood field? Well, for the Early Childhood Education students, they wanted to get wild and explore nature. Thus, they have chosen to hike to “the most beautiful waterfalls of Selangor” (waterfallsofmalaysia.com) one fine Saturday right after their mid-term exam.
Students arrived at the entrance of Sungai Chiling Waterfalls after 1.5 hour bus ride from ALFA College.
This trip to Sungai Chiling Waterfalls was ALFA Early Childhood Education (ECE) Club’s first trip ever. Without a doubt, everyone was thrilled to go for a trip with their fellow coursemates for the first time. The excitement doubled for the few that have never been to any waterfall prior to the trip! Little did they know that it would be an eventful trip — no kidding.

For those who did their homework, they probably found out that it was going to be a 1.5 hour hike deep into the jungle trail where they had to cross the same river 5 times. For those who weren’t ready for the adventurous terrain, they were probably caught by even more surprise (and excitement) about the massive amount of fish in the river they were crossing!

…while the rest of the group tried hard to keep their feet dry and clean without knowing about the river trekking adventure ahead.
Oh no! The jungle trail ended at the river! As mentioned early, the trekking trail included 6 river crossings one-way — one over the suspension bridge at the start of the trek and another 5 in the water itself. Making the adventure more memorable were swamps and swamps of fish nibbling at their feet as they walked on slippery stone in gushing stream of water…

Do you know that there’s only one male student studying Early Childhood Education in ALFA now? For safety reasons, the group has invited a few of their male friends from other courses to join the trip. The boys definitely came in handy when the girls needed extra support during the adventure.

One wrong turn, extra two river crossings and two hours later, the students reached the scenic waterfall… Imagine the joy on their faces when they stumbled upon the beautiful waterfall around a corner!

Unfortunately, there was an incident at the waterfall right when the students arrived. A boy (not from ALFA group) injured himself while playing at the waterfall. Besides that, the waterfall was mysteriously contaminated by bees. With that, the students made objective judgement and decision to leave the waterfall they have long awaited for, for a safer spot to have their lunch and bath.
Dragon Boat Festival was just around the corner so a student even brought rice dumplings for her picnic!

This bunch woke up extra early that morning to cook a big container of fried rice for sharing.
Snacking and bathing in the clear and shallow river seemed like the perfect match.
What’s a waterfall trip without water splash war?

Cold gushing water did not stop the students from a wefie (with the help of a waterproof pouch of course).
So, was that a good trip? Nope. It was a GREAT trip. On top of the fun and fond memories that they have gathered in this one-day trip, the students have learned a whole lot of values too. Firstly, safety always come first. Watching the incident at waterfall happen was the best lesson they could get. Secondly, always look out for one another. Some were fit and adventurous for this waterfall hike but not everyone was. Through some care and helping hands, everyone made it to the waterfall (and back) happily. And lastly, for the organizing committee, they have bucked up on some event organizing skills. Believe it or not, there were only two persons behind this trip: Angeline as the ultimate organizer and Carmen as the tour guide.
Angeline said organizing the trip was an easy peasy job. Great!
